GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
The Heavy Equipment Supervisor supervises the activities of the Heavy Equipment Operators engaged in operation and repair of Heavy Equipment at the Public Works Department. The incumbent coordinates the allocations of operators and equipment among various construction sites and road crews. Other responsibilities include training employees contacting rental firms to replace incapacitated items and maintaining daily equipment logs. This position allows for substantial independence in order to keep construction projects on schedule. The incumbent is responsible for providing cost estimates and justification for major repairs and modifications to the Public Works Equipment.

Heavy Equipment Operators
MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
-
Performs all duties and responsibilities in accordance with the Blood Tribe Administration Policies and Procedures and the Public Works Operations Manual.

Overseer’s and checks drainage systems, ditches, washouts, etc. in the assigned district and reports any problems for repair.

Schedules work for all operators, ensures the availability of relief operators, approves vacations and monitors the Heavy Equipment Operators

Assigns equipment and ensures that the equipment is safe for operation.

Is responsible for dealing with the homeowners in difficult situations.

Maintains comprehensive records for each item of equipment. Assembles reports on the suitability, reliability, availability and operating costs of various models of equipment.

Contracts equipment rental firms to provide replacements for incapacitated machinery, minimizing construction delay.

Works closely with the Public Works Mechanics for the repair and maintenance of all heavy equipment machinery.

Assists the Public Works Director in determining the required specifications for new equipment.

Assists with interviewing potential new employees, trains and evaluates new operators, and recommends subordinates for disciplinary action.

Performs administrative duties such as reviewing timesheets, maintaining daily equipment logs on all scheduling of employees.

Assists with any other duties as required.
NECESSARY KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS:
-
Extensive knowledge of heavy equipment operation, maintenance and repair.
-
Extensive knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions applicable to work.
-
Knowledge of technical construction terminology and principles
-
Must be highly motivated and able to work independently.
-
Ability to express ideas effectively orally and in writing and to work from plans and specifications
-
Must be equipped to work long hours during the winter months.
-
Ability to prepare reports and to make cost and equipment estimates
-
Ability to plan, assign and supervise the work of subordinates
-
Must have excellent supervisory skills
-
Must be proficient in the latest Microsoft Software and excel spreadsheets.

Ability to speak the Blackfoot language would be considered an asset.
Qualifications
NECESSARY TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:
-
The ideal candidate must have a completion of level 1 and 11 Foremanship Training and a recognized Heavy Equipment Operators Certificate with 5 years supervisory experience.

Must have a class 3 driver’s license and a reliable mode of transportation.
-
A Class 1 Drivers license would be considered an asset.
-
Must submit an updated driver abstract.
