Heavy Equipment Operator - Road Maintenance 

Permanent/Seasonal

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

The Heavy Equipment Operator on the Road Construction crew maintains the non-highway roads of an assigned district of the Blood Reserve to ensure that the roads are safe for use by the general public.  The incumbent operates a Motor Grader to maintain a smooth and even surface on the roads as well as other heavy equipment such as scrapers, front-end loaders, and dozer as required in order to ensure proper road maintenance.  The Heavy Equipment Operator also performs other tasks and operates other machinery as required to maintain the condition of the roads including operating Snowplows and sanding trucks, installing culverts, replacing road signs and installing snow fences.

 

ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS:

-            Reports directly to the Roads Construction Coordinator

 

AREA OF SUPERVISION:

  • Positions which generally report to the Heavy Equipment Operator - Roads Construction include:

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Performs all duties and responsibilities in accordance with the Blood Tribe Administration Policies and Procedures and the Public Works Operations Manual.

 

  • Checks drainage systems, ditches, washouts, etc. in the assigned district and reports any problems for repair.

 

  • Operates a Motor Grader along the non-highway roads of an assigned district of the Blood Reserve in order to smooth and level the surface of the road and fill in ruts and potholes, pull up the road shoulders and spread new gravel.

 

  • Maintains culverts, texas gates, and signage and mows grass and removes snow in the assigned districts.

 

  • Operates heavy equipment to construct short access roads and approaches to homeowner’s houses, as authorized by the Roads Coordinator on occasions when the Road Construction crew would be unable to perform the service.

 

  • Operates a sand truck to sand icy roads and a snow plow to remove snow during the winter months.

 

  • Performs initial daily maintenance procedures for the heavy equipment, including checking controls, fluid levels, tire pressure and lights and allowing proper time for the machines to warm up.

 

  • Services the heavy equipment regularly through changing oil and filters and performs minor repairs such as changing blades, tightening the alternator and replacing hoses as necessary. 

 

  • Performs other road maintenance tasks as needed including installing and removing snow fences, repairing road signs, repairing the subdeck and guard rails of bridges and cleaning and installing culverts.

 

  • Operates other equipment such as Scraper, Backhoe, Front-end Loader, Packer and Sanding Trucks on occasion as required in the performance of tasks including stock-piling sand and digging graves.

 

  • Assists with repairs to other machinery in the Roads Shop on occasions when own duties are delayed due to weather or repairs.

 

  • Prepares equipment for winter by installing V-Plows, up-rights and wings for plowing snow on grader.

 

  • Maintains logbook of daily activities and problems encountered while monitoring district.

 

  • Prepares monthly written reports of activities for submission to the Roads Coordinator.

 

  • Any other duties required

 

 

NECESSARY KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS:

  • Have excellent skills and abilities in operating and maintaining heavy equipment.

 

  • Possess general knowledge and abilities in mechanics, diesel mechanics, hydraulics and welding.

 

  • Must be able to read blueprints and stakes.

 

  • Be highly motivated and able to work independently.

 

  • Should be able to work carefully, aware of safety risks to self and others.

 

 

  • Must be a Team Player

Qualifications

NECESSARY TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:

  • The ideal candidate must have a heavy equipment operator certificate or equivalent and 2 year’s related experience working with heavy equipment.
  • CSTS and OSSA or BSO courses are required.
  • Class 3 Drivers license and a reliable mode of transportation.
  • Class 1 Drivers license would be considered an asset.
  • Must submit an updated drivers abstract.
