Term - 6 months

SUMMARY:

The Transfer Station Operator maintains the cleanliness of the Blood Tribe Transfer Station where garbage is unloaded by the sanitation workers and the general public and stored for pick-up twice per week by an external agency.  The incumbent also operates the sanitation truck on occasion. The operator also does the duty of delivering and offloading of the transfer station bins to the local landfill station.

 

ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS:

  • The Transfer Station Operator reports directly to the Utilities Coordinator

  • Positions which generally report to the Transfer Station Operator include:

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Performs all duties and responsibilities in accordance with the Blood Tribe Administration Policies and Procedures Manual and the Public Works Operations Manual
  • Maintains the cleanliness of the transfer station by cleaning the area around the building daily and operating the front-end loader to push garbage into the transfer station.
  • Operates the CAT to clean the entire area around the transfer station weekly or as required
  • Sorts metal and wood materials from garbage and places in designated areas for burning or recycling
  • Burns wood materials deposited at the transfer station monthly or as required.
  • Operates the front-end loader to cover the open garbage pit located next to the transfer station.
  • Assist the Utilities Coordinator in developing procedures to improve the operations of the Transfer Station and reduce difficulties with scattered garbage or non-domestic materials being dumped at the station.
  • Performs minor repairs on the transfer station building, when necessary, such as fixing the gate or the transfer station door.
  • Maintains the front-end loader and CAT through procedures such as changing the oil, changing tires, greasing parts, checking hydraulic levels and performing minor repairs or adjustments when necessary if the mechanics are busy.
  • Ability to use tact when necessary to advise proper disposal or garbage to users.
  • Supervises workers from Kainai Community Corrections assisting at the transfer station on occasion.
  • Operates the sanitation truck to collect garbage from the Blood Tribe residents and public buildings.
  • Maintains a log of daily duties and activities for submission to the Utilities Coordinator.
  • Attend monthly staff meetings.
  • Will deliver bins for off loading at the local landfill stations.
  • Any other duties as assigned

 

NECESSARY KNOWLEDGE, ABILITES AND SKILLS:

 

  • Must be highly motivated and able to work independently; and be a team player
  • Must possess general knowledge of mechanics, diesel mechanics, hydraulics and welding.
  • Must have good skills and abilities in operating and maintaining heavy equipment.
  • Must be able to work carefully, aware of safety risks to self and others.
  • Must be able to deal with people professionally and diplomatically.
  • Must have good supervisory skills.
  • Must have knowledge of rigging of bins on the bin truck for delivery to off load.

Qualifications

NECESSARY TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Must have a current WHIMIS Certificate
  • Experience operating scale hardware and accompanying computer software.
  • Must possess a minimum of six (6) months related work experience
  • Must have a valid Class 1 Driver’s license and a reliable mode of transportation
  • Must have Q Endorsement and provide a current driver abstract
