GENERAL DESCRIPTION

The Researcher supports the Tribal Government and External Affairs Director by conducting comprehensive research and analysis to advance the priorities, initiatives, and mandate of the Tribal Government. The position is responsible for gathering, evaluating, and interpreting information related to First Nation governance, treaty and Aboriginal rights, policy development, and community matters to support informed decision-making and strategic planning.

The Researcher conducts both primary and secondary research, prepares reports, briefing notes, and recommendations, and monitors developments affecting Indigenous communities at the local, provincial, and national levels. The position also works collaboratively with internal departments, external organizations, Elders, and community resource people to ensure research activities are accurate. The incumbent must be culturally respectful and align with the interests and objectives of the Blood Tribe.

 

 

ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS:

  •  Reports directly to the Tribal Government and External Affairs Director

 

AREA OF SUPERVISION:

  • Positions that generally report to the Researcher: 

                               NONE

 

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Performs and duties in accordance with the Blood Tribe Administration Policies and Procedures manual.

 

  • Conducts research in accordance with specific directives from the Tribal Government Director in the areas of First Nation rights, governance, and other related matters.

 

  • Conducts all forms of research including primary and secondary research on initiatives as identified by the Tribal Government Director.

 

  • May conduct interviews with elders and other community resource persons.

 

  • May be involved in all phases of the research process on specific research assignments.

 

  • Networks with various Blood Tribe departments and entities as required.

 

  • Develops a database based on research related to research projects he/she is assigned.

 

  • Monitors developments in the external environment in relation to treaty and aboriginal rights and governance and provides briefing notes as requested.

.

  • Prepare regular research and activity reports for the Tribal Government Director and Committee.

 

  • Attend meetings, workshops and conferences as required.

 

  • Any other duties as assigned.

 

 

NECESSARY KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS:

 

  • Must demonstrate strong and varied research skills.

 

  • Must be knowledgeable about various research methodologies and protocols.

 

  • Must have good planning and organizational skills.

 

  • Must be familiar with basic computer programs and software.

 

  • Must be familiar with current First Nation political and legal issues.

 

  • Must possess good communications skills, both written and oral.

 

  • Must be able to take directions and meet deadlines.

 

  • Must have good interpersonal skills.

 

  • Must have an understanding and appreciation of Kainai culture and protocols.

 

  • Ability to understand or speak the Blackfoot language would be considered an asset.

 

  • Must be familiar with the community and a member of good standing.

 

 


Qualifications

 

NECESSARY TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Must possess a Post Secondary degree in Indigenous or Native American Studies, Political Science, History, or a related field with 3 years’ experience working with First Nations and a strong Blood Tribe/Kainai Cultural and Historical Background.

 

  • A combination of education and experience may be considered.

 

  • Must have a valid class 5 drivers license and a reliable mode of transportation.
