Tribal Government - Kainai Peacemaking Program
GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
The Peacemaking Facilitator assists the Kainai Peacemaking (KPP) Program Supervisor and the Peacemakers/Elders by facilitating peacemaking sessions for KPP clients, making referrals to appropriate social agencies and supports as per client case plans, networking with the Alberta Justice system, as well as establishing and maintaining social and health support networks for KPP and KPP clients
ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS:
There are no positions that report to the Peacemaking Facilitator & Support.
Works in the direction of the KPP Program Supervisor and reports to the KPP Program Supervisor and the Tribal Government Director
MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Performs all duties and responsibilities in accordance with the Blood Tribe Administration policies and procedures, KPP policies, the operations manual, with an understanding of the principles of Kainayssini.

Receives monthly case load of KPP clients from KPP Program Supervisor

Assigns a Peacemaker/Elder for each client as appropriate

Schedules peacemaking sessions for each client

Contacts and confirms Peacemaking and counselling appointments with client and Peacemaker/Elder
-
Facilitates peacemaking sessions for each client
-
Schedules traditional counselling sessions and other supports as per case plan for each client as may be required
-
Conduct client consultations with assigned Elders/Peacemakers for clients as may be necessary

Liaise with Crown Prosecutors regarding clients’ progress
-
Establish and maintain working relationships with Crown Prosecutors, Judges/Justices, Probation Officers, Indigenous Court Workers and other Justice personnel

Establish and maintain working relationships with social and health and other program supports on and off reserve
-
Liaise with referral agencies and community resources off and on reserve to assist clients in meeting the requirements of their case plans

Prepare completion reports for KPP clients who have successfully completed their case plans

Attend court with KPP clients when they have completed the KPP program and provide a report to the court

Establish and maintain records for each client and update files on a regular basis

Attend meetings, conferences and training workshops related to Restorative Justice

Assist with presentations at meetings and conferences

Provide regular reports to the KPP Program Supervisor and the Tribal Government Director

Take ongoing training in Restorative Justice, peacemaking, mediation, Kainai culture, traditions, protocol and language; as well as professional development

Assist other KPP programs, projects and KPP staff as needed

Attend and assist with community functions and Kainai ceremonies as related to KPP
NECESSARY KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS:

An understanding and appreciation of the concepts and practice of peacemaking and restorative justice as relates to Kainai
-
Knowledgeable about the Aberta justice system, its functions and processes
-
Knowledgeable about the roles and responsibilities of the Crown Prosecutors, Judges/Justices, Defense Counsel, Indigenous Court Workers, Probation Officers and other Justice personnel
-
Possess an understanding of the social issues faced by First Nation communities and Kainai in particular
-
Possess knowledge and skills in networking with Kainai agencies and external agencies in justice, social and health supports
-
Possess training and experience in peacemaking, mediation, facilitation and/or counselling
-
Possess excellent verbal and written communication skills
-
Excellent planning and organization
-
Must have excellent computer skills and be proficient in the latest Microsoft software
-
Possess a good understanding of technology as relates to the working environment
-
Possess excellent interpersonal skills and ability to maintain good relationships with the Kainai community and the Justice community
-
Possess a good understanding and appreciation of Kainai culture, traditions, protocol and language
-
An ability to communicate in Blackfoot would be considered an asset.
Qualifications
NECESSARY TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:

Must possess a post-secondary degree with a background in Social Science, Native American Studies, or Criminal Justice with a minimum of 3 to 5 years related experience working with First Nation social issues.

A combination of education and experience may be considered

Must submit an updated criminal record check

Must have a valid class 5 drivers license and a reliable mode of transportation
