Job Description
Term - March 31, 2028 with possible extension
GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
The Herd Technician monitors and manages the Kainai Iinnii herd’s health and wellbeing. Responsibilities include monitoring, documenting, reporting and implementing the Herd management activities based on the Kainai Iinnii Rematriation Rangeland Management Plan in accordance with the rules and regulations of the Blood Tribe. The incumbent will work with Blood Tribe departments and community, Waterton Lakes National Park, and others to protect the Kainai Iinnii, and report results and recommendations to the Blood Tribe Land Management Department.
ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS:

Reports to the Kainai IInnii Coordinator.
MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Performs all duties and responsibilities in accordance with Blood Tribe Administration Personnel Policies and Procedures and the Blood Tribe Land Management Department Operational Policy Manual.

Coordinate and implement the Kainai Iinnii Herd management activities.

Preparation for future herds, as outlined by the Kainai Iinnii Rangeland Management Plan.

Coordinate with Blood Tribe Land Management Department Staff regarding conducting rangeland health assessments, fencing and infrastructure management.

Liaison with the Kainai Iinnii Coordinator, research, program coordinators, Kainai Cultural groups, public engagements and fostering Kainai Perspective.

Collecting bison herd health data and updating a bison database on an ongoing basis in accordance with recommendations from the Management Plan.

Assists in mapping field data information.

Monitoring the effectiveness of implemented bison management strategies to ensure cultural targets and goals are being met.

Make recommendations and coordinates preventative programs in order to ensure the sustainable development of the bison herd.

Recommends operating conditions to negate or minimize damage to plant and wildlife communities or their habitat.

Provides information, makes presentations and gives talks for schools, clubs, and interest groups to educate members at large and special interest groups about sustainable resource development.

Prepares reports as required by the Kainai Iinnii Coordinator and the Lands Director in relation to the bison herd.

Any other duties as assigned.
NECESSARY KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS:

Must possess knowledge of rangeland health, natural resources, environmental studies and traditional ecological knowledge.

Must possess good verbal and written communication skills.
-
Must be a team player and able to work as part of a team.
-
Must possess a high level of record keeping and reporting skills.
-
As a public servant, must be able to carry out duties and responsibilities promptly and courteously and maintain professionalism at all times.

A working knowledge of current computer hardware and software including word processing, spreadsheets, databases, web browsers, GIS and GPS is required.

Must be highly motivated with excellent initiative and an ability to work independently.
-
Must be physically fit.
-
Knowledge of the Blackfoot culture and an ability to communicate in the Blackfoot language would be considered an asset.
Qualifications
NECESSARY TRAINING AND RELATED WORK EXPERIENCE:
-
Courses or related training in the area of agriculture or animal science with 2 years related work experience.

A combination of relevant education and experience may be considered.

Must possess a valid Class 5 Driver’s License and a reliable mode of transportation.
